What is a perinatal psychotherapist?

It’s someone who can truly understand and provide you professional insight and guidance as you go through a wonderful yet oh-so challenging time… and when you talk to me, you will know that you have someone in your corner with a specialized certification in helping you with your unique needs – and with a young child of my own, someone with the life experience to back it up.

Being certified in perinatal mental health means that a professional has completed a specialized training program that focuses on the evaluation and treatment of those who may be experiencing mental health concerns during the perinatal and postpartum phase. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, which includes passing the Perinatal Mental Health exam, the candidate earns the certification in perinatal mental health and is eligible to use the credential PMH-C.

What is perinatal mental health?

So how did classical Latin become so incoherent? According to McClintock, a 15th-century typesetter likely scrambled part of Cicero’s De Finibus in order to provide placeholder text to mockup various fonts for a type specimen book

Origins and Discovery

Perinatal mental health is the emotional wellbeing of a person and their partner from conception until one year postpartum. It can include any mental health issue experienced or arising around pregnancy, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, psychosis, PTSD, grief, or loss. Perinatal mental health is an important part of health and well-being and therefore, should be considered a top priority in overall perinatal care.

Origins and Discovery

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are among the most common complications that occur in pregnancy or in the first 12 months after delivery. Despite the negative effects on maternal, obstetric, birth, offspring, partner, and family outcomes, perinatal mental health disorders often remain underdiagnosed, and untreated or under-treated.

Some goals we look to achieve during the therapeutic process

Destigmatizing and normalizing the experiences you have been hesitant to talk about — there’s a reason you feel as you do!

Helping you understand your feelings and develop valuable insight into why you do what you do, and say what you say

Changing the way you think about specific, perhaps problematic, situations

Learning new ways to cope and make any situation less stressful

Improving communication of wants, needs and feelings

Identifying creative and real solutions to problems

Developing stronger relationships with the people who matter to you

Making positive changes for a happier, healthier you

How long does therapy take?

There is no straightforward answer to this. Commonly referred to as “intake,” our initial session consists of gathering background and clinical information that will help us to formulate a treatment plan together. Once complete, this plan will provide a better estimate of how long it may take, and how frequent sessions should be, to achieve therapeutic goals. However, that timeframe may be adjusted several times as our sessions progress. Therapy successfully ends when you have accomplished goals created during the treatment planning phase.

About Us

Hi there and thank you for stopping by, I’m happy you’re here!

After having my own personal experience with perinatal mental health, it became my passion to be an advocate and emotional nurturer for those who are pregnant or in the postpartum phase of their journey. Even if you’re surrounded by family and friends, you deserve to be able to talk to a professional that truly understands and can empower and support your emotional needs during what can be not only the greatest of joys but also a very challenging time.

A little bit about me; I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and New Hampshire with over 20 years of experience. I have helped women (and men) tackle and overcome a wide range of emotional hurdles, including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges, addiction, and self-esteem concerns. You have plenty of choices for counseling out there- but my advanced professional certifications in perinatal mental health as well as in addictions counseling allow me to handle just about any problem you may be facing.

My therapy style is warm and interactive. I believe in open communication and treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion, and I don’t believe in stigmatizing labels. My approach is to ensure that you are in control of your treatment and I will tailor our communication and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs. You are doing everything to care for your baby, whether already here or on the way, and the most important thing you can do is to take care of yourself — not just physically, but emotionally… I believe you are ready to seek a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps toward positive change. As soon as you are ready to take that step, I will be there for you

I look forward to supporting you through this journey to a happier, healthier you.
